Making smoothies at home is a great way to get some fresh fruit and vegetables into your diet plus you can control all the variables and know exactly what is inside. You can choose organic produce and you can choose plant based milks instead of dairy to make your smoothie even greener and healthier! The color is actually quite purple if you follow this recipe as is. The banana makes the smoothie consistency thicker so that you don’t have to add ice cubes which I like to avoid when it is cold outside. I hope you enjoy this delicious blackberry smoothie recipe. With the banana and fresh berries, you don’t even taste the fresh spinach leaves but you do get the added nutrition in this healthy smoothie.
Easy To Make Berry Spinach Smoothie
It is almost blackberry season. This berry spinach smoothie recipe is very easy to make and it tastes great, even my children like it. It is a great snack on a hot day. You can add protein powder to use it as meal replacement for breakfast or lunch or in my son’s case to have as a boost after a run. With so much fruit, you will love the taste of this healthy blackberry smoothie.
Prep: 5 minutes
Yield: 2 servings
Green Berry Smoothie Ingredients :
- 1 banana (peel removed)
- 1/2 cup of blackberries or about 10 large blackberries (fresh blackberries or frozen blackberries)
- 1 cup of fresh spinach leaves (washed and chopped)
- 1 cup of milk (almond milk, soy milk, macadamia milk, coconut milk, cashew milk, or dairy milk)
- 1 tsp of sugar, agave, or maple syrup (you may adjust to your taste)
- 1 tbsp of chia seeds (optional)
I chose bananas for this smoothie recipe because they help give the smoothie a nice thick, creamy consistency. Plus they are loaded with nutrition. As Medical News Today says, “Bananas contain essential nutrients that may enhance heart health, help manage blood pressure, and boost a person’s mood, among other benefits.” You can use a frozen banana or a fresh banana. A more ripe banana is great because it tastes sweeter.
I chose juicy blackberries as an ingredient because they are loaded with healthy benefits and they taste great. Healthline points out that, “Blackberries are a superfood with beneficial vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants. They’re low in calories, carbs, and fat.”
Spinach is one of my favorite greens. Soft in texture and mild in flavor, it just disappears into this fruity smoothie. It still provides some serious health benefits. Real Simple touts the great qualities saying, “Spinach is serious brain food… Spinach provides iron to support healthy blood… Spinach is great for eye health.”
Now, the type of liquid you add is really up to you. However, I like to add some type of milk for the protein value and the creamy texture it provides to the smoothie. I like unsweetened almond milk and grass-fed milk the best but any nut milk will do.
Next, I add a touch of maple sugar for sweetness. It works well because it is liquid sweetener and it contains nutrients such as zinc, magnesium, calcium, and potassium.
Finally, this part is optional since not everyone has them on hand, but chia seeds are a great add in. They bring extra fiber, protein, and healthy fat to the smoothie. If you are trying to use this smoothie as a meal replacement, you can add collagen protein powder instead of chia seeds.
How To Make Blackberry Smoothie
Add all of the ingredients into a high powered blender.
I suggest you chop the spinach leaves before you blend them because more will fit into your measuring cup that way.
Then just blend on high speed until smooth.
Serve in fancy glasses if you want to make the smoothie seem like an extra special treat.
I used an Aardvark paper straw in mine for some extra flare. Paper straws are a greener choice than plastic straws and they often have fun colors or designs.
