Kids Room Decorating Ideas That Will Grow With Your Child

You want your kids to have well-designed, fun, and functional spaces to call their own—but you also know that what a one-year-old’s nursery needs to look like is very different than a three-year-old’s, to say nothing of a seven-year-old’s playroom or even a teenager’s closet! Kids grow quickly and so do their tastes.  Here are some tips to design a room that will grow with your child saving you a lot of hassle down the road.

Inexpensive Kids Room Design Ideas For The Long Haul

So how do you design a kids room that they can actually grow with and into? How can you make a room that can be easily adapted to meet your child’s ever-changing physical needs?  And how can you do so as stylishly—and cost-effectively—as possible?  Well, it all has to do with timeless choices and thinking ahead.

Kids Bedroom Decor Ideas That Will Last And Save You Time And Money In The Future

Well, just consider these inexpensive decorating ideas for kids’ bedrooms to design a room that is functional long term:

  • Whenever possible, invest in adjustable design features. Your child’s closet may have three rows of rods on which to hang clothes—perfect for making three separate rows of baby clothes. Then, when your child gets bigger, you can remove two rows to have more space for larger and longer hanging clothes. That’s what we mean by adjustability.

  • Cubbies are ideal design elements for a child’s room, especially cloth or adjustable ones. For infants, cubbies can be great for stashing diapers, burp clothes, and more. Then you can reconfigure and reuse them later, perhaps for toys, books, or clothing.

  • For toys, focus on bins instead of shelves or drawers. This allows your child to dump things out and play more easily. It also makes it a bit easier for the parent to take a bin to good will when it is time to make space.

  • Always plan ahead with your space. You may need a diaper changing station in the room for now, and that’s fine—but be mindful of what the space can be later on. Perhaps you can one day convert that part of the room into a desk area, or simply a table for crafts or for reading.
  • Choose a wall color that is neutral and will go with many themes.  Then you can just switch out the wall art and accessories to update the look of the room.

Conclusion

And that’s the biggest tip here: When you design a room for kids, always be mindful of the future.

Your child’s needs will change before you know it, and it’s important to be ready for each new transition without making too much work for yourself down the road.  Do you want to design a room for your child that will transition from nursery to teen room? What are your favorite kids room decorating ideas?
