Homemade Toaster Strudels With Nutella

My family loves breakfast!  And during the winter we crave a nice hot breakfast. We like doing homemade breakfasts but sometimes I sneak in a Pillsbury Toaster Strudel. They are just so yummy! The other day, I thought why not make my own homemade toaster strudels?  So I gave it a try.  Though my Nutella toaster strudel recipe did not turn out exactly the same, they were still pretty yummy. I used a crescent roll dough which is a little less flaky than a pastry dough for my homemade Nutella toaster strudels.

Nutella Toaster Strudel Recipe

Nutella Toaster Strudel Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup water, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup milk, room temperature (or warmed to 110 degrees F)
  • 2 tbsps sugar
  • 2 cups bread flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 4 tbsp butter, room temperature
  • 1/3 cup Nutella

How To Make Homemade Toaster Strudel:

The dough recipe is adapted from one I found on Baking Bites. I chose to do this because though you could accomplish the same thing by using puff pastry dough, I didn’t want it to be quite that flaky.

Prepare your crescent dough.  In the bowl of a stand mixer (or in a large bowl) combine yeast, water, milk and sugar. Let stand for 5 minutes, until foamy. Add in bread flour and salt and mix well with a dough hook or by hand. Slice the butter into four pieces and drop them into the dough, letting the dough hook blend them in.  Knead (with a mixer or by hand) for about 4 minutes. Cover the bowl and let rise for 40 minutes in a warm draft-free place.

Turn risen dough out onto a lightly floured work surface. Punch down the dough into a rectangle as much as you can.  Then use a rolling pin to even it out keeping the rectangular shape as much as possible.  Next slice your dough into two rows of equal rectangles so that you have a top and bottom for each toaster strudel you will make. You can use a pizza cutter for this or a regular knife.  Extra dough can me reworked into a ball and rolled out again.  Cut 2 venting slits into each of the top rectangles- they should be about an inch long and in the center of the rectangle about a 1/2 inch apart from each other.

Now, place parchment paper on your baking sheet to prevent sticking (or grease the cookie sheet well). Then place the bottom dough rectangles on the pan and coat all but the edges with a nice thick layer of Nutella.

Next cover and with the top rectangles and press the edges together to shut the pockets.  You can use for finger for pressing the edges or the tines of a fork. Cover these with a clean dish towel and let rise a bit while you preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook for 12-15 minutes or or until golden brown and puffed up. Remove from tray and allow to cool for a few minutes on a cooling rack.

Toaster Strudels Recipe Notes

  • Alternatively, you could use a bread maker recipe for the crescent dough. Or even make homemade toaster strudel with crescent rolls if you need a quick fix.
  • For a variation of this recipe, try filling your own toaster strudel with jelly or pie filling for a sweet treat.
  • For your homemade version, you could brush the tops of the unbaked strudels with melted butter for a little extra yum.
  • The homemade Nutella toaster strudels may be served immediately or you can reheat them before serving them or you can freeze them and reheat before serving.
  • You can create a cream cheese icing like this one from the Kitchn to put over them if you prefer your toaster strudels to be sweeter.

Conclusion

Homemade toaster strudels can be a fun and delicious alternative to store-bought ones. You can customize the filling to your liking, using fresh fruits, different jams, or even savory fillings like cheese and ham. Making your own toaster strudels can be more cost-effective, especially if you already have the ingredients at home. Plus, it is a fun baking project, especially if you involve your kids in the process.

What a clever idea to make homemade toaster strudel without puff pastry. I’m always on the lookout for easy, portable breakfast ideas and you can never go wrong with Nutella. Thanks for sharing this simple recipe! I liked them so much a made them a second time and used strawberry jam for a version of strawberry toaster strudels. Yummy both ways!
