Wooden Sword and Shield Toys

I just discovered my son’s dream store!  My little boy is all about being a knight on the look out for dragons. Or sometimes he is joining Robin Hood’s Merry Band or being a villainous pirate hunting for treasure. This is all great stuff for using his imagination and creating worlds of his own making. He can play happily like that for hours. For this type of imaginative play, he enjoys props and a wooden sword and shield are the perfect toys for him.

This post is brought to you by Tyme Again, which offers quality crafted wooden role-play and historic wooden toys. Role-Play is a vital part of everyday for children because it is so much more than being able to jump about and get exercise; though that in itself is very important.  With active role-play children learn empathy and social skills. It fires their imagination, helps develop their dexterity and – as they create their shared world around them – stretches their abilities to communicate.

Role Play With Wooden Sword and Shield Toys

For children to experience active role-play at its best they need good, well made and safe props. Many are safe to be played with by children as young as three, all are suitable for the ages 5+.

Tyme Again role-play and historic Wooden Sword and Shield toys have been designed with a classic timeless appeal. They are inspired by real swords from eras including Egyptian, Roman, Viking, Celtic and Medieval (they have 36 different styles of swords and dirks/daggers!) Alternatively, your child may enjoy their range of toys from mythology and fairy tales (eg, bows and arrows, wands, Journey Man’s Staff, Wizard’s Staff of Power, Excalibur sword). These toys are great too, as theatrical props for young budding actors in drama groups. They also carry some of the old games our grandparents would have played – eg. Bilbo (cup and ball) and Catch Quoits. Every one of the Tyme Again toys comes with its own interesting, educational swing tag label. This gives some historical or mythological background information.

Tyme Again also offers Print & Paint historical wooden toy shield activity packs.  The Tyme Again toy shied has as much to offer in role-play value as it does in creative play fun!  These shields are designed to interest children in history. Each project includes a hand cut and finished Birch shield, a simple Beechwood sword with its distinct rope guard. The project will also have an A3 size sheet of trace paper with an unbonded ink printed image for rubbing on to the shield face. Additionally, there is a large and informative A3 size colouring poster of the man who would have used that shield in battle. There is also an info sheet to explain how to complete the project.

Tyme Again takes pride in how their toys are made!

Quality workmanship has and always will be paramount to what we do.We are thrilled to be a member of the Guild of Master Craftsmen. This is an honour we don’t take lightly because this is difficult for toymakers to achieve and very desirable for any craftsperson.  All our toys proudly carry the Guild’s stamp to illustrate this.

We take great care, time and expense to ethically source all of our wood (ash, beech, birch, pine and oak) from managed, sustained plantations – only from First World countries, mostly from Scandinavia.  We use minimum packaging (none of our toys come in boxes).  The small amount of plastic we use (on the safety arrows) is recyclable. Our rubber bands are 100% natural (wood latex) rubber, which degrades very easily in sunlight. Labels are 85% recycled and totally recyclable. Our brochures are made from 100% recycled paper.

Our unique rope guard and jute webbing handle protects the hand and absorbs any impact shocks. It also means we do not need to use any tacks, nuts/bolts, nails or screws.  We also do not use any paints or varnishes on our toys. The wood is bathed in raw linseed oil (from flax seeds) and left to dry for up to three days. This increases the flexibility of the wood and brings out the lustre of the grain. Our toys are meant to last for years and years, to be passed on to future generations.

Conclusion

So go ahead and check out Tyme Again for a Wooden Sword and Shield that will inspire an interest in History and for quality that you will feel great about buying!
