As women we have a lot of beautiful things, from clothes, jewelry, dishes, but what about wine glasses? Recently, I became tired of looking at my wine glasses, they were all clear and they didn’t reflect my personality.  Furthermore, I  don’t set a glass down at a dinner party or it’s lost forever in the, “Whose drink is this? Collection,” until they all get tossed at the end of the night. I decided try some DIY projects to make decorative wine glasses.  Here I share with you some do-it-yourself blah-to-beautiful how to decorate wine glasses tips that will reflect your personal style and may even be the talk of the next dinner party!

Decorated Wine Glasses Two Ways

DIY decorative Wine Glasses

I tried two different decorative wine glasses ideas. I liked them both so I will share both with you here. The first way for how to decorate wine glasses is a DIY hand painted embellishment. The second is a decoupage method.

These decorated wine glasses ideas will work on traditional red wine glasses, white wine glasses, stemless wine glasses, and champagne flutes. These are great ideas for commemorating special occasions like the new year, Valentine’s Day, or Mother’s Day. They are also fun to make with good friends who are wine enthusiast.

DIY Hand Painted Wine Glasses

Painted DIY Decorative Wine Glasses Materials:

  • Newspaper
  • Painters tape
  • Rubbing Alchohol
  • Paint made for glass (such as Folk Art Enamel Glass Paints or Americana Gloss Enamel Craft Paint)
  • fine tipped paint brush
  • wine glass sets

How To Decorate Wine Glasses:

Begin by laying newspaper down for easy clean up. Then make sure your wine glasses are all clean.  Use painters tape in areas to make clean lines, such as the rim and very base.

Just before painting, clean surface with alcohol which dries quickly. Paint designs on as you please. If you desire to paint the base, simply flip the wine glass over onto the rim and paint as desired. Allow paint to dry for one hour.

If you have any additional accents such as rhinestones, place with glue and allow to set for about an hour.  These types of accents may cause your wine glasses to need hand washing as they may come off in a dishwasher.

If you use Folk Art Enamel Glass Paints, you will want to do the curing process to make them safe for a dishwasher (or just hand wash if you prefer).  Place in cold oven. Heat to 350. Bake 30 minutes. Turn off oven and allow to cool in oven for 30 minutes.  Remove.  Be sure to precisely follow the paint manufacturer instructions for use.

Your DIY painted wine glasses are all done!

DIY Decoupage Decorative Wine Glasses

Another way to decorate wine glasses is with tissue paper. You can use your old holiday or birthday tissue paper to decorate the glass.

Decoupage DIY Decorative Wine Glasses Materials:

  • Newspaper
  • Tissue Paper
  • Scissors
  • MOD PODGE Plaid Dishwasher Safe Gloss
  • Thin paint brush
  • sequins (optional)

How To Make DIY Decoupage Decorative Wine Glasses:

Begin by cleaning the wine glasses and laying newspaper down for easy clean up. Cut your tissue paper of choice it sections, I find it easiest to cut the paper about 1 inch in width and 5 inches in length. Depending on the look you want to achieve you can cut them into squares, smaller rectangles or even circles. Next dip paint brush into Mod Podge and begin running the glue onto the tissue paper. Don’t be alarmed that the glue is white, it dries clear. Continue until desired look is achieved. If you have any loose ends at the rim or stem of the glass, cut as desired or place tissue paper horizontally on stem toad a unique touch. If you have accent pieces such as sequences, add as desired.

Another Personalization: Wine Glass Charms

A quick and easy way to make glasses personalized without permanently altering their appearance is to use wine glass charms. They are sold at almost every store that sells home goods and also on Amazon and Ebay.

wine glass charms.

Wine glass charms are flexible and open to go around the stem of a glass and gently rest on its base. If you are hosting an event for Memorial Day or talking with the other soccer moms, you can choose a theme to reflect your event. They are a great idea whether even after you have created your own DIY decorative wine glasses.

Once decorated, make sure to hand wash your new decorative wine glasses. They should not be put in the dishwasher. I hope these ideas at a special touch to dinner parties, gatherings and events. Decorative wine glasses make excellent DIY gifts too!  Which style of DIY decorative wine glasses do you think you will make?

I love this idea! We use way too many glasses at our house, especially during the summer. I’ve been wanting to have everyone decorate their own, so they won’t continually pull out new ones every time they want a little beverage. These ideas are perfect!
