I have written a lot about healthy snacks for kids and green convenience foods but sometimes you want a ready made snack that you can still feel good about. Here are three heirloom snacks that you can grab when you are on the go or you just have a craving that you want to satisfy with a healthier option. Whole Foods Market did provide me with snack samples to facilitate review and I chose my favorite items to share with you in this post.
3 Heirloom Snacks For On The Go
First, what does heirloom mean? What are heirloom snacks anyway? Heirloom fruit and vegetables are varieties that have been passed down for generations and have used in modern mass production agriculture. Heirloom seeds are non-GMO are typically grown using organic and sustainable farming practices. Kind of makes you want to bite right in, huh? When I say “heirloom snacks” I am referring to snacks that use heirloom fruits or veggies. Heirloom products can be hard to find and I am so glad to see that Whole Foods Market offers so many of them.
Tiny But Mighty Heirloom Microwaveable Popcorn
You are gonna love this Tiny But Mighty Popcorn. These ancient heirloom kernels make popcorn that is virtually hull-less! That is right. No more picking kernels out of your teeth. I love it! But not just that, Tiny But Mighty Popcorn is easier to digest. Tiny But Mighty Popcorn heirloom kernels are also denser that commercial varieties which means that their popcorn has a more flavorful, natural corn taste that reduces the need for butter, salt, or other additions.
The newly launched Microwave line (Butter, Light Butter & Kettle flavors) – are all non-GMO Project Verified, Gluten Free, dairy-free, Kosher and grown using organic and sustainable farming practices in Iowa. Suggested retail price of $4.69 for a 3 pack box. @TBMpopcorn
Interesting Fact: Tiny But Mighty Popcorn is a recipient of Whole Food Market’s Loan Producer Loan Program, a low-interest loan program created and funded to help local suppliers grow their business. Cool! When I hear stuff like that, it makes me want to work for Whole Foods Market because I want to be apart of something awesome like that.
Terra Chips Heritage Blend, “Seed Savers”
You are probably familiar with Terra Chips since they have been on the market for about 20 years. They are delicious vegetable chips with unusual colors and flavors. Now Terra Chips is launching two new flavors made from vegetables whose varieties are part of the collection at Seed Savers Exchange, a non-profit organization dedicated to saving and sharing heirloom seeds and plants. You will feel good knowing these chips are cooked in expeller pressed oils, made with non-GMO ingredients, gluten free and certified kosher. They are kid tested and approved in my household.
The two new Seed Saver flavors- Heritage Blend and Beauregard Sweets- are available exclusively at Whole Foods Market®. Suggested retail price of $3.79 @Seedsaversx
Madecasse Holiday Chocolate Bars Made From Heirloom Cocoa
I don’t know about you but I consider dark chocolate to be a health food– after all it has lots of antioxidants and it sure is healthy for my mood! Madecasse is made form Heirloom Cocoa and wait, there is more, it is Fair Trade too! Awesome. I really mean awesome because this small company was started by a couple of Peace Corps workers to protect the heirloom cocoa and fragile ecosystem in a way that offers sustainable growth in Madagascar. I love it when people have a great vision and it works!
Madecasse Chocolate Bars are now available in two holiday flavors- Cranberry Orange and Hazelnut. I have to say that they are truly delicious and I had to work hard to keep myself from devouring a third row of chocolate squares! Suggested retail price $4.99 @madecasse
I value the preservation of seed diversity for future generations with heirlooms. I try to grow heirloom varieties in my garden too. Have you ever thought about the importance of seed saving and food diversity? Do you think you will try these heirloom snacks? If you know of any other heirloom snacks, I’d love to increase my repertoire, so please, leave them in the comments!
Also, you may just want to wash those heirloom snacks down with Third Street Festivus Spicy Pumpkin Chai. I did and it is delicious!! I mixed the Whole Trade chai with steamed milk and found that it had a nice strong chai flavor with a fun hint of pumpkin. @WholeFoods
