Good Healthy Snack Ideas Kids Will Love In Their Lunchbox And After School

healthy school snacks kids

Going back to school can be a tough transition for little ones to make. My kids are coming home completely exhausted because it is hard to get into the new routine and they use tons of energy at school. It helps them to have healthy snack options to keep them fueled up for those long days of working, playing, and learning.

easy after school snacks

I pack each of my kids a healthy snack in their lunchbox and I always have lots of good healthy snack ideas kids will love when they come home so they can chose just what they are in the mood for. After school snack time is a great chance for them to unwind while we talk about how their day went.

Healthy Snack Ideas For Kids Made Easy

I am going to suggest several healthy snack ideas kids will like and there are lots of brands that make products to fit those categories. I would like to take this opportunity to familiarize you with the CVS Gold Emblem Abound brand because CVS is committed making it easy to #FindYourHealthy. With the Gold Emblem Abound brand you can be sure that all their products are free from artificial preservatives and flavors, high fructose corn syrup and with 0g trans fat. See each product’s details for full nutritional information. I find it helpful to be familiar with brands that I can get my shopping done more quickly! All of the brands and healthy snack ideas I mention in this post are available at your local CVS or online at CVS.com.

Mixed Nuts Unsalted

1.  Nuts

Nuts are easy, healthy school snacks kids will enjoy that are full of protein to help them replenish their energy. There are so many kinds of nuts to chose from- pecans, walnuts, almonds, pistachios, and more.  Then of course, you can also offer your kids mixed nuts or nuts and dried fruits.  We love the Gold Emblem Abound Mixed Pistachio & Almond Blend and it is unsalted which I think is a good idea to avoid too much sodium in snacks.

stoned wheat crackers

2. Crackers

Crackers are always a popular option for snacking.  Look for whole grain crackers that are low in sodium and sugar like these Gold Emblem Abound Stoned Wheat Crackers.  They also go great served with cheese or peanut butter. You can also find Kashi gluten-free cracker varieties that make healthy after school snack ideas.

Granola Snacks

3. Granola Snacks

An another great healthier snack that is usually full of whole grains, nuts , and dried fruit is granola. Granola bites, granola bars, or granola and yogurt parfaits all make excellent easy after school snacks.

Krave Meat Bars

4. Jerky or Meat Bars

Jerky or meat bars are high protein after school snacks kids will find easy to eat on the go. These are great for days when they are headed from school to a sports practice. I like the Krave brand of jerky and meat bars because they have no nitrates, no artificial ingredients, and they are gluten-free.

fruit snacks

5. Fruit Snacks

Fruit snacks are always popular back to school snacks.  Fresh fruit can be served whole, dried, in bars, or gummy snacks.  Obviously, the most healthy option is fresh fruit but sometimes you want to have options that don’t go bad so you can stash a few in the car for emergency snack times.  When selecting your fruit snacks, try to rule out the ones that contain artificial flavors and colors as well as the ones that have high fructose corn syrup.  The “That’s It.” bars are all natural fruit bars made from only 2 ingredients- just the two types of fruit that you select.  We are also big fans of the Gold Emblem Abound Fruit & Veggie Snack Bars because they are free from artificial preservatives and flavors and they offer 2.5 servings of fruit and veggies per bar (plus they taste great)!

There you have 5 good healthy snack ideas kids will love.  I also have a bonus for you- healthier candy. Candy is not a great snack but there are sometimes when you want to reward your child with a special treat (like after their first day of middle school) and know that it is at least a better for you option that most candy.

Bonus Healthier Treats

A few of my favorite healthier treat options that I picked up at CVS are barkTHINS, YumEarth, and Black Forest Organic. The barkThins are snackable slivers of Fair Trade dark chocolate packed with tasty almonds.  The YUMEARTH gummy bears are made with organic cane sugar and flavored with real fruit juice.  Black Forest Organic uses organic ingredients with no artificial  colors or flavors. While I don’t recommend these treats as everyday snacks, I do think they make great healthier choices when you want to let your children indulge in a treat.
